What to Expect at Your First Appointment With a Spine Specialist

You’ve scheduled your first appointment with a spine specialist. Now you’re wondering what happens next.

Will you need imaging? Will the doctor recommend surgery? How long will it take to understand what’s causing your pain?

Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable, prepare useful questions, and get more out of your visit.

Before Your Appointment: Get Organized

A little preparation can make your first visit more productive.

Start by gathering information about your symptoms and any treatments you’ve already tried.

Consider bringing:

  • A list of symptoms: Include where you feel pain, when it started, and what makes it better or worse.
  • Previous imaging: Bring available MRI, CT, or X-ray reports and images.
  • Medication information: List prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and supplements.
  • Treatment history: Include physical therapy, injections, chiropractic care, or previous surgeries.
  • Questions: Write down anything you want to discuss with your specialist.

You should also be prepared to explain how your symptoms affect your work, sleep, exercise, and everyday activities.

During Your Appointment: Understanding Your Symptoms

Your spine specialist will typically begin by reviewing your medical history and discussing your current concerns.

Be specific when describing your pain.

For example, explaining that your lower back hurts after standing for 15 minutes provides more useful information than simply saying your back hurts.

Your doctor will also perform a physical examination. This may include checking your range of motion, reflexes, muscle strength, sensation, and walking ability.

Depending on the findings, additional imaging or testing may be recommended.

After Your Examination: Discussing Treatment Options

Once your specialist has evaluated your condition, you’ll discuss potential next steps.

These may include physical therapy, medications, injections, lifestyle adjustments, or further diagnostic testing.

Surgery may be discussed when appropriate, but it isn’t automatically the next step.

Before leaving, make sure you understand your treatment plan, what improvements to watch for, and when to follow up.
