What is a Cervical Discectomy?

MI Spine SurgeryA cervical discectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat a herniated disc in your neck (the cervical spine). When a disc becomes damaged, it can press on nearby nerves, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in your neck, shoulders, arms, or hands. A cervical discectomy aims to relieve this pressure and reduce your symptoms.

The Procedure

During the surgery, your surgeon makes a small incision in the front or back of your neck, depending on the location of the damaged disc. The herniated or damaged part of the disc is carefully removed to eliminate pressure on the nerve. In some cases, the entire disc is removed.

Afterward, your surgeon may insert a bone graft or artificial disc in the space where the damaged disc was, helping to maintain stability and normal movement in your spine.

Why It’s Done

A cervical discectomy is usually recommended when non-surgical treatments like physical therapy, medications, or injections haven’t provided relief. It’s also considered when you have significant nerve compression causing weakness or loss of function. By removing the damaged disc, the procedure helps reduce pain and prevent further complications, like permanent nerve damage.

Recovery

Recovery from a cervical discectomy varies, but most people can return to normal activities within a few weeks. Physical therapy may be recommended to help regain strength and mobility in your neck. Though the surgery has a high success rate, it’s important to follow your surgeon’s instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and prevent future issues.

This procedure can significantly improve your quality of life by relieving pain and restoring function to your neck and arms.
