What Causes a Pinched Nerve in Your Neck?
A pinched nerve in your neck develops when surrounding tissue puts too much pressure on a nerve. This pressure can interfere with normal nerve function, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness that may travel from your neck into your shoulder, arm, or hand.
Several conditions can create this pressure.
Herniated or Bulging Discs
The discs between the vertebrae in your neck provide cushioning and help your spine move smoothly. If a disc bulges or herniates, it can press against a nearby nerve root.
You may develop a damaged disc because of an injury, repetitive stress, or changes that occur as you age.
Age-Related Changes in Your Spine
Over time, the discs in your cervical spine can lose height and flexibility. Your body may also develop bone spurs as it responds to wear and tear in the joints.
These changes can narrow the spaces where nerves exit your spine. When there is less room for a nerve, compression becomes more likely.
Neck Injuries
A sudden injury can also lead to a pinched nerve. A car accident, sports injury, or fall may cause swelling or damage that puts pressure on the nerves in your neck.
Even after the initial injury improves, inflammation or structural changes may continue irritating a nerve.
Repetitive Strain and Poor Neck Positioning
Repeatedly holding your neck in an awkward position can place additional stress on your cervical spine. Spending long periods looking down at a phone or working at a poorly positioned computer may contribute to neck strain.
When to Seek Care
Occasional neck discomfort may improve with rest and activity changes. However, you should consider medical evaluation if your symptoms persist, worsen, or include significant weakness or numbness.
Identifying what is causing the nerve compression can help you determine the appropriate next step for relieving your symptoms and protecting your neck.
