How to Manage Neck and Arm Pain

If you’re spending hours at a desk, hunched over a screen, or sleeping in awkward positions, you’re likely putting extra pressure on your neck and shoulders.
Start by adjusting your posture. Keep your computer monitor at eye level, sit with your shoulders back, and take regular breaks to stretch. If your pain is linked to repetitive motions, like typing or lifting, be sure to modify your technique and avoid overuse.
You can also try at-home remedies to ease discomfort:
- Apply heat or cold to the affected area to reduce inflammation and relax muscles
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen
- Use a supportive pillow that keeps your spine aligned while you sleep
- Do gentle neck stretches and mobility exercises to improve range of motion
- Stay active, but avoid activities that worsen your symptoms
Physical therapy is often helpful if pain persists. A therapist can guide you through exercises that build strength and flexibility while addressing underlying issues like nerve impingement or muscle imbalances.
In some cases, arm pain may be caused by a herniated disc or pinched nerve in the neck. If you’re experiencing tingling, numbness, or weakness in your arm or hand, it’s time to see a doctor. They may recommend imaging tests or refer you to a specialist.
The key to managing neck and arm pain is consistency. Make small daily adjustments, stay active, and don’t ignore your body’s signals. With the right approach, you can reduce pain and improve mobility over time.
