Holiday Season, Ladder Safety, and Preventing Injury

When hanging holiday decorations, ladder safety often takes a backseat to the excitement of making your home festive. However, a single misstep can turn your joy into a trip to the ER. Taking a few precautions will keep you safe while you focus on the holiday cheer.

To start, always inspect your ladder before climbing. Look for cracks, loose screws, or bent steps that could make it unstable. Use a ladder rated for your weight and the job at hand. Avoid using makeshift substitutes like chairs or tables—they increase your risk of falls and injuries.

From there, set up your ladder on a flat, stable surface. If you’re working outdoors, clear away leaves, ice, or other debris that could cause slipping. Indoors, never place your ladder on slippery floors or near electrical hazards. Once positioned, ensure it’s locked in place before climbing.

And of course, while climbing, always face the ladder and maintain three points of contact—two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand. Never overreach or lean too far to the side. Move the ladder if you can’t reach your target without stretching. Overextending increases your chance of losing balance and falling.

Falls from ladders often result in serious back and neck injuries that can have long-term consequences. Even a fall from a few feet can lead to fractures, strains, or head injuries. If you feel fatigued or dizzy, take a break before continuing.

Ladder safety isn’t just about you; it’s about ensuring your loved ones have a happy and healthy holiday season. Taking these simple steps minimizes risks and lets you focus on what really matters—spreading joy and celebrating with family. So this year, decorate smart, stay safe, and keep your holidays injury-free.
