Why Does My Back Hurt When I Sit but Feel Better When I Stand or Walk?
Back pain that gets worse when you sit but improves when you stand or walk is a common complaint. Sitting places more pressure on the lower spine than many people realize, especially if you sit for long periods, slouch, or work at a desk. When you stand or walk, your spine changes position, your muscles activate, and pressure may shift away from irritated areas.
Several issues can cause this pattern, including:
- Disc irritation or herniated disc: Sitting can increase pressure on the spinal discs, which may worsen pain if a disc is inflamed or pressing on a nerve.
- Poor posture: Slouching rounds the lower back and can strain muscles, ligaments, and joints.
- Tight hips or hamstrings: Limited flexibility can pull on the pelvis and increase stress in the lower back while seated.
- Sciatica: If a nerve is irritated, sitting may increase pain that travels into the buttock, leg, or foot.
- Muscle strain: Injured or overworked muscles may feel worse in certain seated positions.
- Facet joint or arthritis-related pain: Some spine joints may become irritated depending on posture and pressure.
The fact that walking helps is often a good sign. Gentle movement improves circulation, reduces stiffness, and helps the muscles that support the spine stay active. However, pain that repeatedly returns when sitting should not be ignored, especially if it affects your work, driving, sleep, or daily activities.
You can try simple changes, such as using lumbar support, taking standing breaks, adjusting your chair height, stretching your hips and hamstrings, and avoiding long periods in one position. But if the pain lasts more than a few weeks, travels down your leg, or comes with numbness, tingling, or weakness, it is time to get checked.
A spine specialist can help identify the cause and recommend treatment, which may include physical therapy, medication, injections, or other options based on your symptoms.
