The Most Common Causes of a Lumbar Strain

A lumbar strain may not be the most serious back injury, but it has the potential to cause pain and discomfort for an extended period of time. Furthermore, if you don’t treat the injury appropriately, it could result in long-term problems.

Here are some of the most common causes of a lumbar strain:

•    Heavy lifting
•    Pushing or pulling
•    Sudden twisting of the lower back, such as when playing sports
•    Lower back curvature
•    Weak abdominal muscles
•    Tight hamstrings
•    Poor posture

The best way to treat a lumbar strain is through a combination of the following:

•    Rest
•    Ice and/or heat therapy
•    Exercise
•    Stretching
•    Strengthening exercises

While it’s simple to diagnose yourself with a lumbar strain, it doesn’t mean you’re right. Keep a close eye on your injury and recovery progress, making note of anything that seems out of the ordinary. Should you suspect that you may be suffering from a more serious injury, it’s best to receive immediate medical care.

When it comes to your back and neck health, it’s critical that you take extra care. This holds true with every type of injury, including a lumbar strain.
