How to Prevent a Neck Injury When Lifting a Heavy Object

Neck PainMaybe you’re staffed with the responsibility of lifting heavy objects every day on the job. Or maybe you purchased a new big screen television and you need to transport it into your home.

Regardless of why you’re lifting a heavy object, it’s imperative to take the necessary steps in preventing a neck injury.

Here are four things you should absolutely do:

·      Don’t take on more than you can handle: If an object requires a team lift, find at least one other person to help. Don’t assume that you can do the job on your own, as this is the quickest way to injure yourself.

·      Maintain your posture: Keep your back and neck straight and your eyes ahead. Dropping your head before you lift increases the likelihood of an injury.

·      Keep the object close to your body: The closer the better, as carrying the object away from your body puts extra strain on your back and neck.

·      Use your legs: Don’t put the majority of the strain on your neck and back. Instead, rely on the strong muscles in your legs and hips to do the majority of the work.

If you injured your neck or back while lifting a heavy object, don’t wait to seek medical attention. Waiting to do so can result in additional harm, thus making your recovery that much more difficult.
