How is a Neck Fracture Diagnosed?

If you suspect any type of neck injury — serious or not — it’s critical that you receive immediate medical attention. This is the only way to ensure that you receive an accurate diagnosis and subsequent treatment.

A fracture is one of the most serious neck injuries, as it can cause both short and long-term problems. And if you don’t treat it appropriately, there’s a greater chance of it causing trouble for the rest of your life.

A neck fracture is not something that you diagnose and treat at home. Instead, when you visit your doctor, urgent care facility, or emergency room, they’ll do the following:

•    Review your medical history, such as to learn more about previous neck conditions and how the injury occurred.
•    Ask you a variety of questions related to the injury.
•    Conduct a physical exam.
•    Order imaging tests, such as a CT scan, X-ray, and/or MRI scan to analyze the injury and surrounding areas.

After taking those steps, your doctor can make an accurate diagnosis. They can also discuss treatment options and your long-term prognosis.

If you’re diagnosed with a neck fracture, be sure to consult with a specialist to ensure that you get the care you need to increase your odds of making a full recovery.
