Does Sciatica Require Surgery?

Sciatica has the potential to cause serious pain and discomfort. And if you don’t treat it in the appropriate manner, you can expect your trouble to linger.

While many people assume that surgery is the only way to cure sciatica once and for all, it’s not generally the first option. There are a variety of non-surgical treatment methods that can help you find relief. These include but are not limited to:

•    Physical therapy
•    Daily lower-back stretches
•    Bed rest (generally for two to three days)
•    Low impact exercise, such as short walks
•    Ice therapy
•    Heat therapy
•    Massage therapy
•    Acupuncture
•    Pain relievers

If none of the above treatment methods generate the results you’re seeking, it may be time to consult with a surgeon. At the very least, they can provide a better idea of what you’re dealing with, how to proceed, and whether or not surgery is an option.

So, to answer the questions above, sciatica does not always require surgery. There may come a point when this is your only option, but until then it’s best to experiment with the treatment options listed.
