Workplace Back Safety: Things That Can Cause Injury

Here are several things that can cause back pain at work:

·      Heavy lifting: if you find yourself lifting heavy items – even once – it greatly increases the risk of a back injury. Proper lifting technique can help protect against this.

·      Prolonged sitting or standing: don’t overlook the dangers of staying in the same spot for a prolonged period of time. For example, if you’re hunched over your computer for eight hours per day, it can take a toll on your back (and other parts of your body). Don’t be afraid to get up and stretch throughout the day.

·      Slip and fall: a fall to the ground can cause a variety of injuries, including those to your back. While you do your best to watch every step you take, you never know when you’ll run into trouble.

From a strain to a sprain to a herniated disk, an on the job back injury is not out of the question.

If you hurt your back at work, stop what you are doing, report the injury to your supervisor, and receive immediate medical attention. Taking these steps will protect you in more ways than one, all with the idea of overcoming your injury as soon as possible.
