How Can You Prevent a Herniated Disc?

Herniated DiscNot only can a herniated disc cause quite a bit of pain and discomfort, but it could also call for many types of medical treatment. In the most severe cases, a surgical procedure may be the best option for treating your herniated disc.

While not always true, a herniated disc is often the result of the aging process. Over time, the discs that separate the vertebrae dry out, become thin, and weaken.

While there is no way to stop yourself from aging, there are other things you can do to promote spine health. Here are some steps you can take to help prevent a herniated disc from impacting your life:

·      Stretching. Get into the habit of stretching your back in the morning and at night, as this can help improve flexibility.

·      Opt for low impact exercise. It may be different than what you’re used to, but swimming or walking can strengthen back muscles without placing too much stress on your discs.

·      Eat a healthier diet. Believe it or not, what you eat can have an impact on your spine health. Furthermore, dropping a few pounds may go a long way in putting less pressure on your spine (among other body parts).

Unfortunately, even if you take these steps you could find yourself dealing with a herniated disc at some point in the future.

If this happens to you and the issue doesn’t resolve on its own through rest and physical therapy, don’t hesitate to look into your other treatment options. You don’t want the pain to stop you from living your best life!
